Roller Skate Size Guide

Roller skate sizing can be weird. Different brands use different size systems, and your regular shoe size is only a starting point. The best way to get the right fit is simple: measure your feet first, then use the sizing information for the exact skate you’re buying.

☀️ The Sunday sizing rule

Don’t guess from your sneaker size.

Measure both feet, use the larger measurement, and check the size guidance on the individual product page. If you’re between sizes or unsure, ask us before ordering — we’d much rather help you get it right the first time.

How to measure your feet for roller skate sizing

A few extra measuring tips

The graphic above covers the basics. These little details can make your measurement more accurate:

  • Measure at the end of the day, when your feet are often at their largest.
  • Wear the socks you plan to skate in.
  • Stand on a hard, flat floor rather than carpet.
  • Measure both feet and use the larger measurement.
  • Measure from the wall/heel line to the tip of your longest toe.
  • Centimeters are especially helpful because many skate manufacturers provide measurements in metric units.

Once you have your measurement, compare it with the sizing information for the exact skate model you’re considering.

🛼 What should roller skates feel like?

Roller skates generally fit closer and more securely than casual sneakers. You don’t want your foot sliding around inside the boot while you skate.

  • Your toes should be close to the front without being curled, crushed, or painfully pressed.
  • Your heel should feel secure with little unnecessary lifting.
  • Your foot should feel supported side-to-side rather than swimming around in the boot.
  • Snug is okay. Pain, numbness, or pinching is not.

Important: Some skate boots soften and conform to your foot with wear, but you should not buy an obviously too-small skate expecting it to stretch an entire size in length.

Why there isn’t one universal roller skate size chart

Because it wouldn’t be very helpful. Roller skate sizing varies by brand, model, and sometimes even boot construction. Some skates use men’s sizing, some use women’s sizing, some use European sizing, and others use their own manufacturer scale.

That’s why Sunday Skate Co. puts model-specific sizing guidance on our product pages whenever it’s available. If a skate is labeled in men’s or unisex sizing, we’ll tell you there rather than asking you to memorize a one-size-fits-all conversion.

Wide feet, narrow feet & high insteps

Foot length is only part of fit. Width, foot volume, and instep height can make two people with the same foot length feel completely different in the same skate.

If you know you have wide feet, a high instep, a narrow heel, or another fit concern, check the fit notes on the product page or contact us before ordering. We can help narrow down which models are likely to work better for you.

Sizing roller skates for kids

It’s tempting to buy several sizes up so kids can grow into their skates, but an oversized skate can make skating harder because the foot moves around inside the boot.

For growing feet, look for an appropriate fit now or consider an adjustable kids’ skate designed to accommodate growth rather than buying a fixed-size skate that’s much too large.

Quick fit check when your skates arrive

Before skating outside, try your new skates on indoors on a clean surface with the socks you intend to wear.

  • Lace them fully — an unlaced boot can feel much looser than it actually is.
  • Stand up and bend your knees slightly into a skating stance.
  • Check that your toes aren’t curled or painfully compressed.
  • Make sure your heel feels reasonably secure.
  • Walk carefully or gently roll only on a clean indoor surface while deciding on fit.

Sizing FAQ

Should I order my normal shoe size?

Not automatically. Your street-shoe size is useful as a reference, but skate brands don’t all size the same way. Measure your feet and check the sizing information for the exact model.

What if my feet are two different sizes?

That’s very common. Use the measurement from your larger foot when choosing a size.

What if I’m between sizes?

Don’t automatically size up or down. The best choice depends on the particular skate and your foot shape. Check that product’s fit notes or contact us for help.

Do roller skates stretch?

Some materials and padding can soften or mold to your foot over time, but skate boots generally won’t gain meaningful length. A skate should not be painfully short when new.

Still not sure which size to order?

Send us your foot measurements, usual shoe size, and the skate you’re considering.

We’re happy to help. Good skating starts with skates that actually fit. ☀️🛼
